Eastern State Penitentiary -Terror Behind the Walls In a time when the mental health profession was still in it's infancy little was known about the human mind or the devestating affects of keeping people locked up without human contact for very long periods. Eastern State was Americas first true penitentiary. Designed by the Quakers, it was built so that each man could be kept in complete isolation, and serve his entire sentence without ever coming into contact with another prisoner. This, it was beleived, would force them to look inward and reflect on their crimes. But after years of lonely isolation many of the prisoners became irreversibly brain damaged and the experiment was declared a failure. Now it is beleived these tortured souls still haunt the ruins of Eastern State Penn, making it one of the top rated scariest haunted houses in the United States. The Terror Behind the Walls tour begins inside the penitentiary's 177 year old prison yard, where guests are entertained with stories and a film about the prisons ghosts. Guests are then fingerprinted and "processed" into the prison, interrogated by the warden and terrified by the sadistic jail guards. In the Night Watch portion of the tour guests are left alone in the dark prison with only a flashlight and must find their way out. Definately not for children or the faint of heart.
